May 23, 2012 we boarded our American Airlines flight out of LAX at around 5:00pm PST. We arrived in Maui around 7:30pm Local time. Exhausted, we gathered our bags, made our way to Enterprise Car Rentals to grab our Jeep and headed down to the Wailea Marriot. By the time we were all settled in it was about 9:30 and we both crashed. We were going to have a VERY early start to our first day.

It was highly recommended that we visit Haleakala, AKA the East Maui Volcano. It's a massive shield volcano that forms more that 75% of the Island of Maui. At it's summit you are at a standing at around 10,023 feet. I was told that you could see some of the most beautiful sunrises in the world here. Why not?? You just also have to deal with FREEZING cold tempuratures and CRAZY winds. No big deal. WORTH IT!
We had arrived at the summit probably around 5:15am-ish with about a couple hundred other people patiently waiting for the 5:38am sunrise. We snapped a few pics, ran in and out of the building that was up there just to get warm and then bam, there it was. It truly was an amazing experience to see the sun rising there was unlike anything I've ever seen before. It really did take my breath away. So then we decided it was a good idea to bolt on out of there before these hundreds of people started making their way down. Didn't want to get caught in a rediculous caravan of cars. We made our way just a few hundred feet down the road probably and found another look off point and figured let's just see what the view is like here.
We walked up some steps to find just one other couple standing there so I figured cool, I can offer to take their pictures and they could take a few of Wesley and I. So we did. (Little mental image to throw at you. I was wearing black Under Armour Sweat Pants, three shirts and my Green Bay Packers hoodie, with total bed head and my glasses) As the man took a few of our pictures I proceeded to say thank you and walked towards him to grab my camera back. I looked up and he had this look of oh my god what is he doing on his face. I turned around and BAM!!, Wesley's hand was in his pocket and he was getting down on one knee and I immediately turned into a HOT MESS. The man however still had my camera in his hands and he proceeded to just click away. I'm not sure how long this process actually was but I know that I said "Are you kidding me?" at least 4 or 5 times and I know that I had a crazy mixture of emotions ranging from crying to laughing to just all out being rediculous. I still don't even know 100% when during the process Wesley actually said "Will you marry me", or even when I said "Yes" but it all happened and he placed the most gorgeous ring ever on my finger.
Once the emotions were a little more contained and the man and his wife also kind of came down from their high just from seeing what had happened they told us that the previous day they had just celebrated their 20th wedding anniversary. They proceeded to give us a little marriage and love advice for our future and we just then kind of parted ways. I will never be able to thank that man and his wife for what they were able to do for us that day. I wish now that I would have taken down their name and contact information so that I could have sent them a proper thank you. Not everyone has the chance to get their entire proposal on camera.
It's so crazy. Before we left everyone had brought it up.... it's gonna happen in Maui, he's going to ask you there, we just know it. I just wanted to go to Maui with no expectations and just have a great time. Needless to say he pulled off one of the craziest proposals ever. Once we were back in the car he kind of went down the timeline of events he had leading up to this. Turns out he literally had just gotten the ring the day before we left for our trip! I guess he realized that he couldn't NOT propose in Maui. He didn't know exactly when he just knew he would. So yea, within the first 10 hours of being in Maui and before 6AM as the Sun had been rising that crazy guy asked me to spend the rest of our lives together!
Oh yeah here is the BLING :)
damn right he better have asked!!! I asked him in SD and he said NO I'm not!!! Still not going to forgive him for that!!!
ReplyDeleteChris and him have been friends since, well, for forever...so he told us and finally sent the pic of the ring when he bought it. I think it's sweet that it seems he just couldn't wait to ask you...I mean...the first real day of your trip...I was shocked because I figured we wouldn't hear anything until the weekend. Reading this story was fun because I realize what a perfect moment it was. When it feels right, it's go time, and it takes some strong feelings to follow through with it...I know he loves you something crazy and sounds like the feeling is mutual. So happy for you guys! Cheers! :)
ReplyDeleteAnd yes I cried reading this. Thanks for making me cry like a baby. ;)
